Vancouver has been called a "city of neighbourhoods", each with a distinct character and ethnic mix.

The city of Vancouver is divided into two main areas: Vancouver West and Vancouver East. Comprised of many neighbourhoods, each with their own distinct character and ethnic mix. With a population of 611,869 (2007 estimate), it takes a dedicated professional to navigate the complicated streets of Vancouver's residential real estate market.

Vancouver West consists of many of the city's premier neighbourhoods, with some of the most expensive properties in Canada: Arbutus, Cambie, Coal Harbour, Downtown, Dunbar, Fairview, False Creek, False Creek North, Kerrisdale, Kitsilano, Mackenzie Heights, Marploe, Mount Pleasant, Point Grey, Quilchena, Shaughnessy, South Cambie, South Granville, Southlands, South West Marine Drive, University, Yaletown, West End.

Vancouver East consists of many of the city's more "colourful" neighbourhoods and has been undergoing an amazing transformation in the last several years: Champlain Heights, Collingwood, Fraser, Fraserview, Hastings, Hatings East, Killarney, Knight, Main, Mount Pleasant, Renfrew, Renfrew Heights, South Vancouver, Victoria.

The city has been selected to co-host the 2010 Winter Olympics, which is influencing economic development.
